    Non Lucrative Visa in Spain

The Spanish Non Lucrative Visa is ideal for individuals who wish to reside temporarily in Spain without carrying out any work or professional activity in the country.

This residence permit allows you to live in Spain for one year, enjoying your personal activities, studies, retirement, or leisure time — all while maintaining your income from abroad. As this visa does not authorise employment, applicants must demonstrate that they can support themselves through passive income.

At Del Canto Chambers, we make the process simple and efficient. Our dual-qualified legal and tax professionals guide you step by step through the application, ensuring full compliance with Spanish immigration law and your home country’s tax regulations.

What is the Non Lucrative Visa

The Non Lucrative Visa is regulated under Organic Law 4/2000 of 11 January on the Rights and Freedoms of Foreigners in Spain and Royal Decree 557/2011 of 20 April.

It is designed for non-EU citizens who wish to reside in Spain without working. The application is made through the Spanish Consulate in your country of residence.

Once granted, the visa allows you to live in Spain for 12 months. It can later be renewed for two-year periods and eventually converted into a work residence permit.

Are you eligible for the Non Lucrative Visa

To qualify for a Non Lucrative Visa, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover living expenses in Spain:

    • Main applicant: €28,800 per year
Each family member: €7,200 per year

  • Full private medical insurance with a company authorised to operate in Spain.
  • Clean criminal record in Spain and in your country of residence over the past five years.
  • Proof of non-employment, if you are of working age — including a letter confirming employment termination and your P45 from HMRC (for UK applicants).
